One of the biggest struggles for some editors, especially when you first start out, is in keeping a view of the bigger picture while diving deep into the details of sentence structure, flow, technical correctness, etc. It is something that many editors work on continuously as it is key to having a real impact on those that you are trying to help. To maximize the benefit for the author you must make sure that the manuscript is technically correct, but beyond that, it is infinitely more helpful if you can comment on the experiments themselves, how the experiments fit together, and all of the big picture stuff that ensures that they are telling a coherent and publishable story.
